Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? Hopefully the answer is here:
When are the club sessions and how much do they cost?
Almost all club sessions are on Sunday afternoons from 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Beginners intro sessions cost £20, returning member sessions for from £7 to £15 depending on the length of the session and whether you are using club equipment. Full details of upcoming sessions are on the bookings page.

Are there membership fees on top of that?
No! All our sessions are "pay and play" with no membership fees. Once you've done your introduction, you can come to any "returning member" session simply by booking in online and paying the relevant fee for that particular session, which includes everything - boss fees, equipment hire and insurance. This makes our club particularly accessible to people and families who just want to try archery.

What is the minimum age for participants?
Our minimum age is 6 - this is a requirement of our insurance.  It's worth bearing in mind that archery might not be suitable for all children as soon as they turn 6. Our intro sessions are 2 hours long, and kids follow broadly the same instruction as the adults; it therefore depends on each child's ability to concentrate for 2 hours. Some younger children may benefit from waiting until they are a little bit older. We generally find that by the age of 8, virtually all kids will have a great time at their intro session.
All participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult (a parent or guardian) who stays with them for the whole session.

I am an experienced archer. Do I really have to do the introduction?
Yes; it is another requirement of our insurance that all members do the same standardised introductory course (in our case, a single session). This is to ensure that all people shooting at the club understand the procedures and protocols that we have in place. We generally shoot to ArcheryGB rules, but there are a few small differences which everyone needs to be aware of.

I never seem to be able to book. What's going on?
Our club is very busy and spaces are in high demand, especially during autumn and winter when indoor activities are especially popular. We open bookings for each session on Saturday mornings at about 9.30am, for the session in 2 weeks time. Some weeks the session will 'sell out' in about half an hour. Therefore, if you have a date in mind that you'd like to attend, set an alert to get on the booking page at 9.30am on the relevant Saturday (2 weeks before).

I last came to the club months/years ago. Can I still book as a returning member?
The answer to this depends partly on how many sessions you did before you took a break, as that tends to dictate how well you'll remember what to do. Our general rule of thumb is that if you attended 6 or more sessions, you should be OK with a break of a year or so. If you only did your intro and then one or two sessions, it might be more like 6-9 months. Therefore we might ask you to do the intro session again if you've been away from the club longer than these periods, as both a refresher and also in case any procedures or rules have changed. Please be aware that if you book in for a returning member session after a very long break, we might cancel your booking and contact you to move the booking to an intro session.

I use a wheelchair. Can I attend?
Yes! Our venue is wheelchair accessible, and archery can be done whilst seated, provided the design of your chair allows it. Generally this means the sides of the chair are not too high and don't have anything that would get in the way of the bow or catch the string. If you'd like to discuss the specifics of this, please get in touch via email at [email protected].

I am / my child is autistic or has sensory processing difficulties. Is archery suitable?
It is difficult to answer this question for everyone. Many people who have been diagnosed with autism, have sensory processing difficulties, or consider themselves neurodivergent, get a lot from participating in archery. It is a sport that you can enjoy in a wide variety of ways. It rewards, and helps to build, focus, mindfulness and resilience. There are clear rules and procedures which everyone must follow, and which give the sessions a clear structure. However, it is important to note that our sessions are held in a large, quite noisy sports hall. There will typically be around 30 people present at a normal club session. Archery can be relatively noisy from the sound of arrows hitting the targets, and towards the end of most sessions, we will do a couple of rounds where people shoot balloons, which can be very noisy if lots of people are doing it. This is only a short time at the end of the session, and some people will wear earplugs at this point. If you are trying to decide if archery is suitable for your child, our general guidance is if you feel that they can focus and follow instructions (which is very important for safety reasons of course), for about 90 minutes, then it is worth trying an introduction session.
